New photos from the upcoming Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance dropped today, giving fans a glimpse at some of the characters and sets for the much-anticipated show.
Launching on August 30, the 10-episode streaming series is a prequel to Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s 1982 fantasy adventure, The Dark Crystal. Set in Thra, this series will follow three Gelflings named Rian, Brea, and Deet (voiced by Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel) who discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power. They then set out on an epic journey to start a rebellion and save their world.
Director Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) told Entertainment Weekly that he set out to make a TV show that looked as similar as possible to the original beloved film, which meant pushing for puppetry instead of CG characters.
“I was not fighting against anyone, I was fighting against common sense and practicality,” Leterrier said. “It’s so so complicated to build a puppet, hire puppeteers, all that stuff. We chose the long, hardest road and we’re very thankful [we did]. It looks absolutely stunning.”
The voice cast of the series is quite impressive, with names such as Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, and Donna Kimball. Jim Henson’s daughter, Lisa Henson, serves as one of the executive producers.
