Saturday while Marvel Studios was lighting the internet on fire with a bonkers presentation announcing a bevy of new films and Disney+ TV shows in the MCU’s future, Disney was celebrating the MCU present, making the somewhat surprise announcement Avengers: Endgame passed Avatar on the all-time global international box office chart.

About $5 million short heading into the weekend by box office analyst’s estimates, Endgame was expected to eventually catch Avatar in the coming weeks off the strength of the re-issue released in late June. But due to what Disney calls “near-final reconciliation of territory grosses as the film approaches the end of its run,” Disney estimates Endgame passed Avatar this weekend. In plain english that means almost all films readjust their foreign totals after a full audit towards the end of its theatrical run. In Endgame‘s case, it found enough quarters in the overseas seat cushions to push it over the top a few weeks early.

In an announcement, Alan Horn, Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Studios said: “A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

According to Disney, Endgame now has $854,216,193 domestic and $1,936,000,000 in foreign box office receipts for a $2,790,216,193 global cume. Both of those individual totals are #2 on the all-time lists unadjusted for inflation behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ ($936,662,225) domestic and Avatar‘s ($2,029,192,375) foreign records, respectively, but together total the global record.

Avatar, which was also readjusted up by Disney, held the previous global record of $2,789,700,000.

Your move, James Cameron.
